Discover Earth Day ​Programs

Join us for a day of programs, prizes,​ and crafts celebrating Earth.​  Crafts in the Children’s Room all day.​

*Weather to Fly By with the Cradle of Aviation  1:30 p.m.  Ages 8 – 12​​
What is something that each and every one of us including animals and plants has had to deal with every day, all year long? Yes it is weather!  Find out about basic weather patterns, where weather can be found, its effects on aircraft and the ingredients you need to conjure up some destructive forces!

*Turbo to Hydro with the Cradle of Aviation  2:30 p.m   Ages 8 – 12​
The practical sources of energy include the fossil fuels, natural gas, petroleum (or oil), and coal. Fossil fuels are referred to as nonrenewable energy sources because, once used, they are gone. Students will explore the different types of renewable energy through hands on demonstrations and inquiry questioning.

*Turtle Time with the Long Island Aquarium  2 & 3:30 p.m. â€‹â€‹
Learn about turtles and tortoises.  A Long Island Aquarium educator will be here to teach us about these gentle creatures.  Yes, we have them on Long Island.

 

 

 

Long Island Traditions and EMPL Present: The Baymen​
Saturday, January 5 from 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.
(Climate Day Program)​
Baymen of Long Island will talk about what they do and how it has changed. Hands-on activities with the Baymen.  A great and rare experience. Meet our Baymen and find out what they do.  Welcome throughout the day.


An Inconvenient Truth with Jeff Tongue of NOAA​
Saturday, January 5 at 1 p.m.
This movie motivated discussion on a national level of how we view climate.  Jeffrey Tongue will lead a discussion after the film, giving insight and updates on the realities of how our world is in transition.

*Amateur Observers’ Society Young Astronomers
Saturdays, January 12 & February 9 at 1 p.m.

This award-winning program introduces those ages 6 to 13, to science with hands-on activities. Parents and care givers welcome.

 

 

*Making Books Sing Presents:  If You Really Love Polar Bears​
(Climate Day Program)  Saturday, February 2 at 1 p.m.   ​​(Children ages 5 - 9)
Registration ongoing.  Meet Patch, a little boy who loves polar bears! Every day is filled with activities celebrating his favorite bear…but at what cost? While on a magical journey, Patchy learns how much he impacts the planet. This interactive story is told with music, puppetry and comedy!

Long Island Aquarium Brings Their Touch Tank​
Thursday, January 31 at 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.
The creatures living along our shores come in many different colors and shapes, and this program gives students the chance to meet some of these diverse characters. 5th to 12th grade students will learn about the diverse coastal environments surrounding Long Island.  ​Welcome throughout the day.

Exhibit partners include the American Library Association, the Lunar and Planetary Institute, and the National Girls Collaborative Project.
